Day Off = Fabric Shopping at Haberman's!

I needed to go. Cross my heart, it's true.  I had to go there.  It's prom season, and another senior girl needs a pretty, pretty dress made by the magical (sewing) math teacher. She loved the dress Mila Kunis wore to the oscars...

 so she picked a pattern...

and we've been on the search for an embellished lavendar lace and satin.  Did you know that embellished lavender lace is hard to find? I figured that out the hard way, after searching online, making phone calls and ordering swatches.  Even Haberman's only had 1, and thank goodness the half-yard they had left was exactly the right color and style!
The lace is only for the bust, the stretch satin will be everywhere else.  I'm excited (as usual) to make this up, so stay tuned... Prom is May 26!

I also had a gift certificate to spend (darn it!), so I picked these lovelies up and took them home...

Poly chiffon, for a summer tunic
In exchange for being so good and patient, and playing so well in the "play area" at the fabric store, we stopped on the way home and had lunch at McDonald's Playland.  A great day was had by all!!!

p.s.  When you hear "formal attire" on a wedding invitation, what comes to mind? Friday night, ceremony at the reception hall... floor length or knee length? Solid or print? I've pulled a bunch of patterns and fabrics from the stash... TO BE CONTINUED!

Hmmmm, if "formal attire" is actually on the invitation I would say a long skirt is required and a dark suit for your husband. I also think it depends on the circles you travel in. In some circles that could mean black jeans! Just kidding. Find out what the bridesmaids are wearing. I am seeing a lot of short retro bridesmaid dress that could be called "formal". Perhaps something like that could work too. Did you see that picture of Liz Tailor in that white tulle dress, sort of short tea length, that was everywhere when she passed? That's what I am thinking. It will be interesting to see the responses you get.

The prom gown sounds lovely.

What pretty fabric... That dress will be so pretty... I went to a formal Friday night wedding about 4 years ago, and since I wasn't really close w/ the bride and groom I just wore a suit, and I was soooo underdressed! I think whether you go short or long, just pick something really dressy... Have fun! I wish I would get invited to another one so I had an excuse to dress up...

Wow - I don't know how you manage to sew for your students and keep your cool. Ditto for taking your kids to the fabric store! I'm very impressed. Love the prints you picked up.

Nice shopping finds! I love them all - but you knew I would. Looking forward to seeing what you do with them. Leave it to Haberman's to have exactly what you needed. YEA!
To me, formal means long - to the floor and pretty. And hubby in a suit. If children go the boy in a suit and a pretty dress, not necessarity long, for the girl.

I would say formal was either a floor length or cocktail length dress, especially since retro is so popular now and you're seeing a lot more short dresses... but as Bunny said, that sort of depends on your hosts' interpretation as well. You have to hope you're familiar enough with them to know that they think wearing socks makes it "dressy". Around here you could expect a formal event to be cocktail wear but also you would probably see some men in pressed jeans, heavily starched white shirts and jackets (and $1000 boots). Which I've adjusted to perceiving as "formal" but maybe not everyone would see it that way.

I hate wedding invitations.

You get an amazing amount of work accomplished. A.Maze.Ing.

Gorgeous fabrics - especially the red abstract that you bought for yourself. My wedding was black tie, and women wore knee length dresses. I think the only no no is wearing black or white. The dress you made to wear in Vegas would be perfect, but you probably want a new dress!
